Ice Cups

02.19.05 Saturday

Naturally, the Southern Conference leads the way. As for the tournaments … Dowd Cup should be amazing, and the final four of the McMullen Cup should be as well. I can’t wait to see how the Valley teams do in the Mercer County Tournament, while you have to predict a Haas Cup final between Roxbury and whoever wins the Morristown-Pequannock game. Threepeat for my hometown boys? In the NBIAL, look for Fair Lawn and Ramsey to come out on top in what should be several very exciting days at the Ice Vault.

Top 20 (records as available through 2/18/05)

  1 — Red Bank Catholic (17-5, 9-3 Southern White) Last Week – 1

Dowd Cup its best chance for a trophy.

  2 — Old Bridge (19-2-1, 10-0 Southern Blue) Last Week – 5

Should win both cup games by more than five goals.

  3 — Toms River North (16-3-1, 10-1-1 Southern White) Last Week – 2

Speaking of best chances for a trophy, this is TRN’s only chance.

  4 — Morris Hills (13-8-1, 6-6-1 MCSSIHL Halvorsen) Last Week – 3

         Mennen Cup advancement unlikely.

  5 — Mountain Lakes (10-9-4, 5-7-1 MCSSIHL Halvorsen) Last Week – 4

Likewise, but they should keep the score down.

  6 — South Brunswick (9-7-2, 6-5-1 Southern White) Last Week – 7

Tough draw in the cutthroat Southern White.

  7 — Monsignor Donovan (13-4-1, 8-4 Southern White) Last Week – 6

Southern White their best chance for a postseason win.

  8 — Steinert (14-6-2, 9-3-1 CVC Valley) Last Week – 9

Division-clinching win over Princeton makes up for Hightstown loss.

  9 — Princeton (15-4-1, 8-4-1 CVC Valley) Last Week – 8

My Mercer County Tournament dark horse, if a No. 3 can be a dark horse.

10 — Vernon (18-4-1, 11-1 Northern White) Last Week – 10

Fantastically inconsistent, they need McMullen Cup title.

11 — West Milford (10-5-4, 7-2-3 Northern White) Last Week – 11

West Milford will keep it close, if it can get past Ridgewood.

12 — Indian Hills (14-2-7, 11-0-7 NBIAL) Last Week – 12

Props for giving up an unbeaten season to play better competition.

13 — Fair Lawn (16-4-4, 12-2-4 NBIAL) Last Week – 13

Cutters should breeze to NBIAL Division I title.

14 — Rumson/Fair Haven (10-9-3, 3-8-1 Southern White) Last Week – 16

Win over Middletown South deserves a jump, but cup play will tell.

15 — Ramsey (16-2-4, 11-2-4 NBIAL) Last Week – 14

Must get past semifinal roadblock to face Indian Hills in Division II final.

16 — Verona (17-5-1, 11-0-1 Central White) Last Week – 15

Van Cott Cup should not be a problem.

17 — Summit (11-10, 9-3 Central White) Last Week – 17

They were a little high back on Jan. 1, but I told you they were top-20 material.

18 — Ridgewood (12-6-4, 7-3-2 Northern White) Last Week – 18

Maroons deserve credit for finishing third, could cause cup trouble.

19 — Roxbury (13-7-1, 12-0-1 MCSSIHL Haas) Last Week – 19

No excuses for not bringing home the Haas Cup.

20 — Mahwah (10-9-2, 7-8-2 NBIAL) Last Week – NR

Thunderbirds sneaking up on No. 3 seed in Division II.

Dropped out:

No. 20 Watchung Hills (17-3-2, 10-0-1 Central Blue)
