01.23.06 Monday

I touched on my difficulties with some of the rankings this week in Sunday’s blog entry. The 3-5 and 10-14 spots are particularly congested. Southern Red stock is up after Red Bank Catholic’s performance against St. John Vianney. As a result, Northern Red and NBIAL stock is down. Morris County is a mixed bag thanks to differing schedules and non-league results.

Top 20 (records as available through 1/22/06)

  1 — Seton Hall Prep (10-0-2, 9-0-2 Gordon) Last Week – 1

This Week: 1/23 vs. PDS, 1/28 vs. Del

Pirates continued their solid play at the top of the state with wins over Don Bosco Prep and CBA.

  2 — Don Bosco Prep (7-4-1, 5-4-1 Gordon) Last Week – 2

This Week: 1/25 @ Wyoming Seminary (Pa.), 1/27 vs. SJV, 1/29 @ BC

Ironmen held off St. Peter’s Prep but will need to be sharper Friday against St. John.

  3 — Delbarton (8-4-1, 6-3-1 Gordon) Last Week – 3

         This Week: 1/28 @ SHP

This was my toughest decision of the week, but Delbarton has the edge with two wins over CBA.

  4 — Morristown-Beard (12-2, 7-2 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 4

This Week: 1/23 vs. Men, 1/26 vs. MK

Crimson have almost no easy games the rest of the way, so we’ll soon find out if they’re for real.

  5 — St. John Vianney (8-4-1, 4-3-1 Gordon) Last Week – 5

         This Week: 1/27 @ DBP, 1/29 @ PJ

A pair of chances for a high-profile road win for the Lancers, who have relied on goaltending in other big games.

  6 — CBA (3-5-5, 1-5-5 Gordon) Last Week – 7

This Week: 1/25 vs. SPP, 1/27 @ Ran

The Colts are a young team getting better as the season goes on, but sooner or later they’ll need some Ws.

  7 — Pope John (4-3-4, 1-3-4 Gordon) Last Week – 6

This Week: 1/24 @ Rmpo, 1/27 vs. BC, 1/29 vs. SJV

Another team rocked by tragedy, the Lions have not won a game in a month.

  8 — St. Peter’s Prep (6-4-2, 1-4-2 Gordon) Last Week – 9

This Week: 1/23 vs. BE, 1/25 @ CBA, 1/27 vs. Rmpo

Interesting week for the Marauders in non-league contests, but they badly need a win Wednesday.

  9 — Morris Knolls (12-2, 8-1 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 8

This Week: 1/26 vs. MB, 1/28 vs. Cha, 1/29 @ IH

Golden Eagles did not convince in emotional win over Randolph but can prove themselves with a clean sweep this week.

10 — St. Augustine Prep (9-1, 8-1 Southern Red) Last Week – 10

This Week: 1/24 vs. RBC, 1/27 @ PDS

No referees for Friday’s scheduled game against Ramapo; that’s gotta be embarrassing.

11 — Red Bank Catholic (7-6-1, 5-3 Southern Red) Last Week – 14

         This Week: 1/24 @ SA, 1/26 @ MD, 1/27 vs. MidS

Caseys have been on the rise and gave St. John Vianney quite a scare; we’ll see how they handle two toughies in three days.

12 — Bergen Catholic (1-7-4, 1-6-2 Gordon) Last Week – 12

This Week: 1/27 @ PJ, 1/29 vs. DBP

I know they have one win. I don’t care. They played right with three top-six teams in the last month.

13 — Randolph (10-3-1, 7-2 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 13

         This Week: 1/27 vs. CBA

Rams played very well against Morris Knolls, and Friday should be an interesting test for them.

14 — Bishop Eustace (8-4-1, 5-2-1 Southern Red) Last Week – 15

This Week: 1/23 @ SPP, 1/25 @ Malvern Prep (Pa.), 1/27 vs. TRN

I’m not wild about moving teams up after a tie with a lower-ranked team, but they can earn it against a tough schedule.

15 — Montgomery (12-1, 7-0 Central White) Last Week – 17

This Week: 1/24 vs. West, 1/27 @ BR

Cougars reap benefits of Hillsborough’s win over Bridgewater, but they’ll have to do the same Friday.

16 — Hillsborough (15-1, 9-0 Central Blue) Last Week – NR

This Week: 1/27 vs. WO, 1/28 @ Rid

Alright, they’re for real. (EDIT:) Second Blue Division team I’ve ever ranked, and they’ll have to stay sharp against bad competition.

17 — Toms River North (10-4, 5-4 Southern Red) Last Week – NR

         This Week: 1/23 vs. OB, 1/25 @ BR, 1/27 @ BE

Mariners could win or lose all three games this week, but a season-series win over MonDon merits this spot.

18 — Monsignor Donovan (6-6-1, 5-4-1 Southern Red) Last Week – NR

         This Week: 1/26 vs. RBC

Griffins are still a borderline case, but tying Eustace deserves some props.

19 — Bridgewater-Raritan (11-2-1, 8-0-1 Central Red) Last Week – 11

This Week: 1/25 vs. TRN, 1/27 vs. Mtgry, 1/28 @ WE

Chatham win the only thing keeping the Panthers in the Top 20 this week.

20 — Chatham (12-3, 6-2 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 16

This Week: 1/23 vs. MH, 1/25 @ Pin, 1/28 vs. MK

Cougars really only have one standout win on the year, and they’ll have to defend that on Saturday.

Dropped Out:

No. 18 Ramapo (11-1-2, 11-1-1 NBIAL)

No. 19 Paramus Catholic (9-1-4, 4-0-4 Northern Red)
