01.09.06 Monday

Normal play resumed this week with plenty of big Gordon Conference games, with Don Bosco Prep, St. John Vianney, and CBA on the rise and Delbarton and Pope John tumbling a bit, among other noticeable results. The Southern Red continues to surprise, with Red Bank Catholic knocking off Toms River North. There’s plenty of good action this week, with a big-time CVC doubleheader Wednesday and the ‘Holy War’ in South Jersey on tap Friday afternoon.

Top 20 (records as available through 1/8/06)

  1 — Seton Hall Prep (6-0-2, 5-0-2 Gordon) Last Week – 1

This Week: 1/13 @ DBP, 1/14 vs. PJ

A great week on the ice for the Pirates, but yet another death in the N.J. hockey community has to be sobering.

  2 — Don Bosco Prep (6-2-1, 4-2-1 Gordon) Last Week – 4

         This Week: 1/13 vs. SHP

With a little additional depth, the Ironmen may be hitting their stride. Two games against SHP in four days ought to be telling.

  3 — Delbarton (5-3-1, 3-2-1 Gordon) Last Week – 2

         This Week: 1/14 vs. SJV

Green Wave a bit fortunate to stay this high, but expect a tighter defense come March.

  4 — St. John Vianney (5-2-1, 2-2-1 Gordon) Last Week – 14

This Week: 1/11 vs. MB, 1/13 vs. SPP, 1/14 @ Del

The week’s big mover thanks to 5-4 win over Pope John; remember, Lancers also beat St. Peter’s Prep.

  5 — Pope John (4-2-2, 1-2-2 Gordon) Last Week – 3

         This Week: 1/11 @ CBA, 1/14 @ SHP

I apparently cursed the Lions last week, and this week’s games should be even more telling.

  6 — St. Augustine Prep (8-0, 7-0 Southern Red) Last Week – 5

This Week: 1/12 @ MidN, 1/13 vs. BE

Hermits will spend most of the week thinking about nemesis Bishop Eustace, which has won 6 of the last 7 between the rivals.

  7 — Randolph (8-2-1, 5-1 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 8

This Week: 1/10 vs. Men, 1/14 vs. ML

Rams should take care of business before late-month clashes with Morris Knolls, CBA, and Morristown-Beard.

  8 — Morristown-Beard (7-2, 5-2 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 9

         This Week: 1/9 @ Pin, 1/11 @ SJV, 1/13 @ MKA

A week of private-school matchups for the Crimson, who could keep moving up with a win Wednesday.

  9 — CBA (3-3-4, 1-3-4 Gordon) Last Week – 12

         This Week: 1/11 vs. PJ

I said the Colts would win one of three last week; they went 1-0-2 to soar into fourth place on points.

10 — St. Peter’s Prep (5-2-1, 1-2-1 Gordon) Last Week – 6

This Week: 1/9 vs. RBC, 1/13 @ SJV

I would go to tonight’s matchup if it were at the Armory, but the Marauders’ bigger game is Friday.

11 — Morris Knolls (9-1, 5-1 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 10

This Week: 1/12 vs. ML, 1/14 vs. WMC

Tough to drop after two easy wins, but the Golden Eagles are just holding form right now until Jan. 17.

12 — Bergen Catholic (1-6-4, 1-5-2 Gordon) Last Week – 13

         This Week: idle

Crusaders deserved to tie CBA and played well against Seton Hall Prep.

13 — Chatham (8-2, 5-2 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 11

         This Week: 1/9 @ Cra, 1/11 @ BR, 1/13 vs. Jef

Wednesday’s game at the Rock ought to be a beauty. Panthers and Cougars are virtually synonymous, so there might be a tie in the works.

14 — Bridgewater-Raritan (8-1, 6-0 Central Red) Last Week – 15

This Week: 1/11 vs. Cha, 1/13 @ Rid

Big week for the Central Red leaders, whose best win to date is 2-1 over Ridge.

15 — Red Bank Catholic (6-4-1, 4-3 Southern Red) Last Week – NR

This Week: 1/9 @ SPP, 1/13 vs. MidN

This is more like where I expected the Caseys to be, and their non-league schedule will keep giving them chances to move up.

16 — Toms River North (7-3, 3-3 Southern Red) Last Week – 7

This Week: 1/10 vs. MidS, 1/12 @ MD

If you take out the split with RBC, best wins are now Hun (only 7-5) and Brick Township; not exactly convincing.

17 — Montgomery (9-1, 5-0 Central White) Last Week – 18

         This Week: 1/10 vs. Sum

The real tests will come later in the month for the White/Blue-leading Cougars.

18 — St. Joseph Metuchen (5-1-2, 3-0-2 Central Red) Last Week – 18

         This Week: 1/11 vs. Vero

It’d be easier if I knew how they did on Saturday, but the Falcons’ one-goal win over RBC deserves some credit.

19 — Ramapo (8-02, 8-0-1 NBIAL) Last Week – 19

         This Week: 1/13 vs. Rmsy

Raiders stay even with St. Joseph Metuchen thanks to a tie with Ridge, but ties won’t hold up for long.

20 — Paramus Catholic (6-1-3, 2-0-3 Northern Red) Last Week – 16

This Week: 1/14 @ Para, 1/15 vs. MKA

Three ties in a weak Red Division are not that impressive; it’s going to be tough to judge the Paladins.
