12.26.05 Monday

We got a little more clarification on where the Gordon Conference teams stack up against the rest of the state last week, but there were still plenty of hard decisions. I had to drop the middling Southern Red trio of private schools after each suffered a surprising loss (surprising either in the result or the margin of victory) and the lower-level Gordon Schools after BC’s loss to Morristown-Beard. Weighing the CVC and NBIAL schools is still a tough chore, so here’s where we’re at right now.

I will add another set of rankings around January 2, but I’m not quite ready to commit to a private/public or White/Blue format just yet.

Top 20 (records as available through 12/25/05)

  1 — Seton Hall Prep (3-0-2, 2-0-2 Gordon) Last Week – 1

         This Week: idle

Pirates held to a 3-3 tie by Pope John, which means the winner of the Jan. 6 clash with Delbarton will earn the No. 1 spot.

  2 — Delbarton (4-1-1, 3-0-1 Gordon) Last Week – 2

         This Week: idle

It sounds like the Green Wave played well in Rhode Island, and an overtime win over Bishop Hendricken could be a turning point.

  3 — Pope John (4-1-2, 1-1-2 Gordon) Last Week – 3

         This Week: idle

While a tie against SHP was a good result, it merely served to keep Pope John in the race, instead of giving the Lions a leg up.

  4 — Don Bosco Prep (5-2, 3-2 Gordon) Last Week – 4

         This Week: idle

Ironmen outplayed Randolph in a 4-2 win that included an empty-netter.

  5 — St. Augustine Prep (6-0, 5-0 Southern Red) Last Week – 9

         This Week: idle

Wins over Notre Dame and Red Bank Catholic keep the Hermits’ stock on the rise.

  6 — Morristown-Beard (5-1, 4-1 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 18

         This Week: 12/28 vs. WMC

Wins over Bergen Catholic and Chatham vault Crimson toward the top of the list with four straight wins since Knolls loss.

  7 — St. Peter’s Prep (2-1-1, 1-1-1 Gordon) Last Week – 8

This Week: 12/30 vs. Archbishop Stepinac (N.Y.)

Shutting out Bergen Catholic earns the Marauders some figurative breathing room above the remaining Gordon teams.

  8 — Randolph (3-2, 2-1 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 11

This Week: 12/26 vs. MH, 12/28-9 @ Montclair Tournament (MidN, TBD)

Rams were respectable in DBP loss and have a slight edge on the public-school field thanks to schedule.

  9 — Toms River North (5-1, 3-1 Southern Red) Last Week – 10

This Week: 12/27-8 Mayor’s Cup (TRE, TBD)

Mariners were not overwhelming in win over Brick but should still win Mayor’s Cup.

10 — Bridgewater-Raritan (6-0, 4-0 Central Red) Last Week – 13

This Week: 12/27-8 SCT (Hboro, TBD)

Panthers expect a pair of big games as they chase a second consecutive Somerset County title.

11 — Morris Knolls (5-1, 2-1 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 12

         This Week: 12/30 vs. MH

If they can get past school-district rival Morris Hills, Golden Eagles have more than three weeks between division opponents.

12 — Chatham (4-2, 3-2 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 14

This Week: 12/27-8 @ Bayonne Tournament (2 vs. Bay, MidS, Jef)

Cougars ought to have little trouble winning this week’s tournament.

13 — Bergen Catholic (1-4-2, 1-3-1 Gordon) Last Week – 5

         This Week: idle

Crusaders have to be psyched for a week off after disappointing three-goal losses to MB and SPP.

14 — CBA (2-3-2, 0-3-2 Gordon) Last Week – 7

         This Week: idle

Colts felt back on track with 6-0 win over MonDon, but a 2-2 tie with St. John Vianney won’t convince anybody.

15 — St. John Vianney (4-2-1, 1-2-1 Gordon) Last Week – 6

         This Week: idle

The St. Peter’s Prep win looks a lot better now, but consistency has never been a strong suit.

16 — Paramus Catholic (3-1-2, 1-0-2 Northern Red) Last Week – 20

         This Week: 12/29 @ WE, 12/31 @ ML

Never has staying idle looked so good, but the Paladins will have to prove themselves by taking care of two publics this week.

17 — Ridge (4-1-2, 1-1-2 Central Red) Last Week – NR

This Week: 12/27-8 SCT (Mtgry, TBD)

Still a tough one to figure out, but the 5-0 win over Montgomery, which had no trouble with Hun, makes a difference.

18 — St. Joseph Metuchen (2-1-2, 2-0-2 Central Red) Last Week – NR

         This Week: 12/28 vs. RBC

A beneficiary of the Southern Red collapse, the Falcons still lack an impressive win.

19 — Indian Hills (5-1-1, 4-0-1 NBIAL) Last Week – NR

This Week: 12/27 vs. Rmsy, 12/28 @ Rmpo

The Braves may have the toughest week of any top-20 team, wearing the bull’s-eye against quality league opponents.

20 — Princeton (8-0, 6-0 CVC Colonial) Last Week – NR

         This Week: idle

The Little Tigers, weak schedule and all, move up because everybody else lost. They have five above-average games in January, however.

Dropped Out:

No. 15 Red Bank Catholic (4-3, 2-3 Southern Red)

No. 16 Bishop Eustace (3-3, 3-2 Southern Red)

No. 17 Monsignor Donovan (2-3, 2-2 Southern Red)

No. 19 St. Joseph Montvale (3-2-3, 3-0-1 Northern Red)
