02.17.03 Monday

Snow wreaked havoc on the schedule once again, while I was enjoying baseball at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Hah. Anyway, state tourney qualifiers have been determined and the regular season is almost over. Here are three feasible intersectional matchups that I would like to see this week before the postseason begins:

Hopewell Valley-South Brunswick; Pope John vs. any Gordon team; Paramus-Ridge.

All the computer rankings have the South Jersey teams ranked very highly, but Southern Red and White teams have played a grand total of 14 games against Northern opposition, rendering those rankings all but meaningless.

Check out the White/Blue Top 20 ranking for lower-division teams.

Top 20 (records as available through 2/16/03)

  1 — Bergen Catholic (14-1-2, 9-1-2 Gordon Conference)

This Week: 2/19 vs. Iona Prep (N.Y.); make-up games @ SJV & vs. CBA

Only game this week was a big 6-4 win over Long Island powerhouse St. Mary’s.

  2 — Delbarton (18-2-1, 12-0 MCSSIHL Mennen Division)

            This Week: 2/19 @ Pin

Green Wave lost to Pennsylvania prep power Hill for the fifth straight year, but recovered to beat Randolph.

  3 — CBA (13-3-3, 7-3-3 Gordon Conference)

This Week: 2/19 vs. RBC; 2/22 @ Mclr; make-up game vs. BC

Colts have clinched third place in the Gordon Conference and should clinch the Shore A title as well.

  4 — St. John Vianney (13-6-2, 6-5-2 Gordon Conference)

This Week: make-up games with BC, TRE

Lancers had a crucial 4-1 win over Hudson Catholic to move up, but Hawks will likely get home-ice.

  5 — Seton Hall Prep (12-5-3, 10-2-2 Gordon Conference)

            This Week: Idle

Pony Pirates tied Bishop Eustace 3-3 but will still get a first-round bye in the Gordon Cup playoffs.

  6 — Hudson Catholic (10-7-5, 6-4-4 Gordon Conference)

This Week: 2/17 vs. #14 DBP
Hawks struggled in loss to SJV, but beat Brick 4-2 to likely earn home-ice advantage against CBA.

  7 — Randolph (16-3, 8-3 MCSSIHL Mennen Division)

This Week: 2/19 @ PDS; make-up vs. Men

Rams almost knocked off Delbarton, but a last-minute goal dooms Randolph to second place.

  8—Pope John (13-1-3, 11-1-2 Northern Red)

            This Week: 2/19 @ MB

Hats off to the Lions for winning the heated race in the Northern Red with an 11-1-2 division record.

  9—West Windsor-Plainsboro North (17-3-1, 10-1-1 CVC Valley)

This Week: 2/19 vs. Pri; 2/21 vs. ND

Mercer County Tournament champions need to take care of business in CVC play before the states.

10—Brick Township (7-10-4, 3-8-3 Gordon Conference)

            This Week: 2/17 vs. #20 BM; 2/19 @ Mclr

Green Dragons have crosstown rivalry game and a big public game against Montclair before Gordon Cup.

11—Morris Knolls (13-6-2, 7-4 MCSSIHL Mennen Division)

This Week: 2/17 vs. Rox; 2/20 @ MB

Golden Eagles had a big 3-2 win over Tenafly as they look to lock up the third spot in the Mennen Division.

12—Tenafly (14-4-3, 8-2-3 Northern Red)

This Week: make-up game vs. St. Joseph Montvale?

The Tigers will finish third in the Northern Red and face Paramus Catholic in the first round.

13—St. Peter’s Prep (11-7-3, 8-4-1 Central Red)

            This Week: 2/18 @ Bay

Marauders knocked off St. Augustine 5-2 and can clinch Central Red title with a win over Bayonne.

14—Don Bosco Prep (13-7-1, 10-2-1 Northern Red)

            This Week: 2/17 @ #6 HC

Ironmen beat Paramus 5-1 to earn a first-round bye in the Northern Red; interesting matchup with HC.

15—St. Joseph’s Metuchen (5-13-1, 2-10-1 Gordon Conference)

            This Week: make-up vs. BE?

Falcons need to stay motivated with plenty of time before the state tournament begins.

16—Bishop Eustace (3-12-3, 0-10-3 Gordon Conference)

This Week: 2/21 vs. SA; make-up vs. SJMet?

Crusaders have a rematch with St. Augustine to stay in shape for the states.

17—St. Augustine (10-4-1, 8-2-1 Southern Red)

            This Week: 2/21 @ BE

Hermits fail their biggest recent non-league test in 5-2 loss to St. Peter’s Prep.

18—Ridge (17-1-2, 12-0 Central White)

This Week: make-up vs. John; Cra?

Red Devils still haven’t wrapped up Central White crown, with remaining games against toughest foes.

19—Hopewell Valley (17-4-1, 11-2-1 CVC Valley)

            This Week: 2/19 vs. Ham

Bulldogs drop after overtime MCT quarterfinal loss to WWPS; need another game before states.

20—Brick Memorial (12-8, 6-6 Southern Red)

            This Week: 2/17 @ #10 Bri

Crushed TRE 6-0 to lock up second place in the Southern Red on tiebreakers.

Best of the Rest (ranks 21-32, alphabetically)

Bernards—Five straight wins make them the most consistent Central Red team; gotta hope they make both tourneys.

Chatham—The Cougars beat Pingry 3-1 to become Halvorsen Division favorite.

Clifton—Mustangs winless in their last four divisional games and will finish third or fourth.

Hightstown—Relatively easy run to the MCT final, but Tousant’s absence left them overmatched against WWPN.

Middletown South—Disappointing tie with rival North leaves Eagles hoping for an at-large state tourney bid.

Montclair—Mounties picked up a solid 5-4 win over Roxbury, but even a first-round bye might be little help.

Morristown-Beard—Crimson game with Pingry will have plenty of ramifications throughout the MCSSIHL.

Paramus—Spartans tied rival Paramus Catholic but had no problem clinching the fourth seed in the Northern Red.

Roxbury—B.J. Kuper is new all-time leading scorer after 7-1 demolition of Morristown-Beard.

South Brunswick—They need a game (pick up Hopewell!) before states begin.

West Essex—Knights slipping of late and need a win against Bayonne to finish third.

WWPS—Pirates slip into the top 32 with their overtime quarterfinal win over Hopewell.
