This is my ranking for the bottom half of New Jersey ice hockey. To make it organized, I have chosen to rank the White and Blue Divisions of the NJIHL, the Haas and Charette Divisions of the MCSSIHL, and the bottom six teams of the CVC. Along with Red Bank and Point Pleasant Boro, this works out to 57 teams, just over half of all teams.
It is hard to put together, because there is even less interregional play than usual, but I’ve done my best. All comments with some founding in team’s game results are welcome to jyardley@rice.edu.
Top 20 (records as
available through 1/5/03)
1 — Ridge (9-1, 6-0 Central White) (#14 in regular poll)
Great work against the big guns, now run the table.
2 — Ramapo (11-0-2, 5-0-2 Northern White) (#19 in regular poll)
No excuse for not finishing unbeaten with their schedule.
3 — South Brunswick (9-0, 7-0 Southern White)
Edged Rumson/Fair Haven to stay atop Southern White.
4 — Middletown North (7-1-1, 7-1 Southern White)
Showed improvement in 5-1 win over Montgomery.
5 — Princeton (4-4-1, 2-3-1 CVC Valley)
Big game against Notre Dame on Monday.
6 — Montville (10-0-1, 6-0-1 MCSSIHL Haas)
Still haven’t played anyone, but MCSSIHL stock is up.
7 — Cranford (4-3-3, 2-1-1 Central White)
Tied Mendham, played decently against Ridge; Johnson game
is huge.
8 — West Windsor-Plainsboro South (3-4-2, 2-2-2 CVC Colonial)
Poor showing in losses to Brick Memorial and Mendham.
9 — Kinnelon (7-1-2, 4-0-2 MCSSIHL Haas)
Cruising along in Montville’s shadow; key game with Wayne Valley.
10 — Johnson Regional (3-1-1, 3-0-1 Central White)
Edged Wayne Valley 5-4; need to prove themselves against Cranford.
11 — Morristown (2-2-2, 2-2-1 MCSSIHL Haas)
Eight shots, three goals against Montclair, #12 in the state poll).
12 — Rumson/Fair Haven (6-5-1, 3-3-1 Southern White)
Bad loss against Montgomery, but we can forgive them for
now.
13 — Fair Lawn (3-2, 3-1 Northern White)
Don’t care what the shots say, they shouldn’t lose to ParHills.
14 — Pascack Valley (6-2-1, 4-0 Northern Blue)
I like Sunday’s matchup against Fair Lawn.
15 — Toms River South (4-3-1, 1-3-1 Southern White)
Big one against Middletown North this week.
16 — Nutley (6-2-1, 2-2-1 Central White)
Beat Verona, whoop-dee-do: need respectable Ridge showing.
17 — Wayne Valley (3-4-3, 1-2-2 Central White)
Played well against Johnson; need a big win.
18 — Mahwah (6-2, 5-0 Northern Blue)
Still waiting for Pascack Valley.
19 — Montgomery (4-4-1, 3-3-1 Southern White)
Big win over RFH, and they get the chance to do it again in a week.
20—West Milford (5-4-1, 1-3-1 Northern White)
A last-minute addition after 4-2 win over Old Tappan.
